School Food Standards for Lunches

Woodley Lunch Bunch provides 2 lunches per week during the school holidays to the children of families who find themselves needing a bit of extra help. We provide these lunches for children aged 1 - 18. The first lunch is a traditional packed lunch whilst the second is one which the child can make at home with a parent/carer on a different day and has included pitta pizzas, quesadillas, vegetable stir frys, egg muffins and hot dogs.

Within the government set Food Standards for School Lunches there are 6 different components which we endeavour to adhere to. However, as we do only provide 2 of the 5 lunches during the holiday week it is our expectation that other meals provided by the parent/carer will provide everything missed by Lunch Bunch meals.

Lunch Bunch is made possible by public donations of food/money and grants/funding from the Local Authority and other businesses. We endeavour to ensure that all food we purchase adheres to the Food Standards for School Lunches.

STARCHY FOODS

Every packed lunch contains a bread sandwich, usually either cheese or ham (depending on dietary requirements) and we always aim to use wholemeal bread.

FRUIT & VEGETABLES

Every lunch contains 2 pieces of fruit - which we try to vary. The packed lunch also contains cut up carrot sticks, cucumber sticks and tomatoes.

MEAT, FISH, EGGS, BEANS & OTHER NON-DAIRY SOURCES OF PROTEIN

Most weeks the sandwiches for the children who eat meat will be ham or chicken. Sometimes the second lunch will contain eggs, beans or other such items.

MILK & DAIRY

We endeavour to include some form of dairy produce in one or other of the lunches each week. We supply alternatives for those with dairy allergies.

FOODS HIGH IN FAT, SUGAR & SALT

Often the lunches will contain a treat (eg: crisps/chocolate biscuit bar), however these are the types of food that generally come in via public donations and are very rarely purchased by Lunch Bunch.

HEALTHY DRINKS

The lunches usually contain a small fruit juice carton, however there are occasions where a more squash-like drink will go out. This will depend entirely on donations received. However, it should be noted that we would never send out fizzy drinks.

ALLERGIES

Some of our families do have food allergies within their household. This is always looked at carefully by the team and an appropriate replacement given instead of whatever the child/family cannot have. It should be noted that it is the parent/carer’s responsibility to check that any food given by Lunch Bunch is appropriate for their child.
